Savouring Istanbul’s Iconic Balik Ekmek in the Heart of London
On a crisp January afternoon, as the sun cast a golden hue over London’s Regent’s Canal, I found myself meandering from Shoreditch to Angel. The canal’s serene waters mirrored the city’s skyline, creating a picturesque backdrop that beckoned exploration. It was along this tranquil path that I stumbled upon Galata Cafe & Bistro, a charming establishment nestled by the water’s edge.
The name Galata immediately evoked memories of Istanbul’s historic quarter, renowned for its vibrant cafes, bustling markets, and the iconic fish sandwiches fish and bread served fresh from bobbing boats along the Golden Horn. Intrigued, I stepped inside, curious to see if this London bistro could capture the essence of that Turkish delight.

The menu was a testament to Turkish culinary traditions, boasting a variety of dishes and beverages. Yet, it was the fish sandwich that caught my eye a nod to its Istanbul namesake.
Opting for the mackerel sandwich, I was pleased to find it prepared with fresh herbs and greens, all lightly dressed with a squeeze of lemon. The fish was grilled to perfection, its smoky flavor harmoniously blending with the crispness of the vegetables. Accompanied by a side of golden chips, the meal was both satisfying and reminiscent of the street food vendors beneath Istanbul’s Galata Bridge. At £18 it offered a reasonable taste of Turkish authenticity in the heart of London.
As I savored each bite, memories of Istanbul’s bustling waterfront came flooding back the aroma of freshly grilled fish, the lively chatter of vendors, and the sight of seagulls soaring above. While Galata Cafe & Bistro couldn’tt entirely replicate the ambiance of Istanbul, it succeeded in delivering a culinary experience that transported me back to those cherished moments.
With its convenient location near Angel and its dedication to authentic Turkish flavours, Galata Cafe & Bistro has secured a spot on my list of favourite London eateries. For those seeking a taste of Istanbul’s street food without leaving the city, this bistro offers a delightful culinary journey along the canal.
