Nestled in the heart of Blackheath, The Panas Gurkha Restaurant has carved out a name for itself as one of the finest Indian-Nepalese dining establishments in the area. On a bustling Monday evening, the restaurant was nearly at full capacity, a testament to its popularity and reputation. As a food critic for the Asian Curry Awards and Taste London Magazine, I had the pleasure of sampling their offerings, alongside a friend who has a penchant for Pan-Asian cuisine.
Our culinary journey began with the Nepalese dumplings, known as momo. I opted for the steamed vegetable momo, while my friend chose the chicken momo. Both dishes were superb, showcasing delicate flavours and a perfect balance of spices. The momo were paired beautifully with a Gurkha beer, enhancing the overall experience.
For the main course, my friend indulged in the Mum’s Chicken Curry, a hearty dish that was both comforting and flavourful. I chose the Kashmiri Lamb Shank, which was cooked to perfection. The lamb was tender, succulent, and rich in flavor, demonstrating the chef’s mastery over traditional Indian cooking techniques.
Additionally, my friend sampled the Drunken Jumbo Prawn, an Indo-Chinese creation finished with brandy. The prawns were impressively large and juicy, with a delightful hint of brandy that elevated the dish. I tried the Roasted Salmon, a beautifully presented dish that was as delicious as it was visually appealing.
We concluded our main course with cheese chili naan and mushroom rice. Both were excellent accompaniments, with the naan providing a subtle kick of heat and the rice offering an earthy, savoury flavour.
Our beverage selection began with the refreshing Gurkha beer, perfectly suited to complement the Nepalese curries. We concluded with a unique Nepalese spiced Gin & Tonic, infused with Timur, a Himalayan Sichuan pepper. This drink was a standout, pairing exceptionally well with the momo and adding an exotic twist to the meal.
The Panas Gurkha Restaurant boasts a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. The only element missing was some traditional Nepalese Buddhist instrumental music, which would have added to the ambiance.
The owner, known for his charitable endeavours, graciously offered us homemade Nepalese flavoured ice cream, called kulfi, as a complimentary treat. This gesture exemplified the hospitality and generosity that pervades the restaurant.
The Panas Gurkha Restaurant serves up some of the best Indian and Nepalese cuisine in Blackheath. With its quality ingredients, well-executed dishes, and impeccable service, it provides excellent value for money. The total bill for a three-course meal with drinks for two people came in under £100, making it an affordable yet high-quality dining option.
The Panas Gurkha Restaurant is a must-visit for anyone seeking delicious, authentic Indian and Nepalese cuisine in a welcoming and vibrant setting. The restaurant’s dedication to quality and customer satisfaction is evident in every aspect of the dining experience.
