A Feast of Mexican Tradition in London
Mestizo Chelsea offers an impeccable celebration of Día de Muertos, combining authentic Mexican culture, exquisite ambiance, and masterful dishes crafted with passion and precision for a vibrant, memorable dining experience.
Earlier this week, Mestizo Chelsea hosted an intimate and unforgettable press dinner to honour Día de Muertos, one of Mexico’s most soulful and culturally rich traditions. Blending art, music, ritual, and, most importantly, food, the evening encompassed everything that makes this celebration so special. From the moment we arrived early and had the opportunity to converse with Marysol Sanchez—the gracious owner behind the Mestizo chain in Mexico City, Madrid, and London—it was clear the evening would deliver a perfect blend of tradition and hospitality.
Marysol’s passion for sharing authentic Mexican culture was evident as she introduced us to the Mexican market located conveniently across from the restaurant, selling an array of products that bring a touch of Mexico to Chelsea. Our early introduction, paired with the thoughtfully crafted ambience at Mestizo Chelsea, set the tone for a remarkable evening.
Mestizo Chelsea strikes a beautiful balance between contemporary sophistication and traditional Mexican charm. The bar, with its standout teal counter adorned with golden accents, offered a lively yet refined aesthetic. Marigold flowers and cultural motifs added festive vibrancy, while warm, inviting lighting tied everything together seamlessly. The dining area, equally impressive, combined elegant, white-linen tables with colourful, cultural touches like marigold garlands and woven-inspired chandeliers. The thoughtful mix of comfort, privacy, and artistry created a welcoming and immersive atmosphere.
Mestizo Chelsea blends authentic Mexican flavours with elegant presentation, impeccable service, and a warm, culturally vibrant ambiance.
Our journey into Mexico’s rich culinary heritage began with exceptional service at the basement that is a place for dance and fun, where staff displayed attentiveness and professionalism, making us feel warmly received throughout the evening. The music was perfect—a soft, cultural playlist that complemented lively conversation without being overbearing. The lighting provided cosy intimacy and orenge atmosphere, and every inch of the space was impeccable in cleanliness, demonstrating utmost respect for detail and guest comfort.
The Mestizo chef demonstrate exceptional culinary artistry, creating beautifully presented, innovative dishes that celebrate both tradition and refined technique.
Of course it was an exclusive dinner designed for the guests. Salmon, duck and lamb chop were the main before the sweet section. There was also a blend of wine, tequila and mexican drinks that I unfortunately have had no time to taste it. Because of driving I just tasted a glass of white wine with salmon and simply I enjoyed.
Salmon dish was a standout offering, the salmon dish presented a masterclass in culinary technique and artistry. The golden-brown sear of the salmon was executed perfectly, locking in its moisture and delivering a melt-in-your-mouth experience. Paired with a vibrant, creamy green sauce, microgreens, and a vivid green purée, the plate embodied balance and creativity. Served against the festive backdrop of Día de Muertos décor, this dish felt both celebratory and refined, offering a sublime sensory delight.
The duck dish was a celebration of contrast and complexity, showcasing a perfectly caramelised crust and a tender, flavourful interior. Resting on a glossy brown sauce and accompanied by a delicate mousse and striking garnish, the dish was as artistic as it was appetising. From texture to flavour, the duck balanced innovation with tradition, making it a luxurious and refined choice for the evening.
The lamb chop dish stole the show with its impeccable preparation and irresistible visual appeal. A beautifully seared golden crust gave way to a juicy, tender interior that captured the essence of expertly cooked lamb. Paired with a rich sauce and thoughtfully placed accompaniments, such as seasonal vegetables, the dish embodied bold, earthy flavours balanced with sophistication. The attention to detail, both in cooking and presentation, underscored the chef’s dedication to providing an unforgettable dining experience.
Mestizo Chelsea masterfully blends contemporary elegance with authentic Mexican culture, offering an environment and experience that delights all the senses. From its stunning ambience and impeccable service to its intricately crafted dishes, every element reflects dedication and passion. The dinner not only celebrated the tradition of Día de Muertos but also showcased the sheer joy of Mexican gastronomy at its finest.
