A Journey Through Flavour and Style With Afrikana Holloway

Cultural Décor And A Dining Experience

Afrikana Holloway delivers a vibrant experience with African-inspired cuisine, stunning interior design, exceptional service, and great value for money, making it a must-visit restaurant in London.

Last year, I first discovered Afrikana when I saw its vibrant facade in various cities. It immediately caught my attention. Later, as I came across its branchei in Holloway, curiosity sparked even further. Yet, despite my intrigue, it took me quite a while to finally pay them a visit. From its exterior, Afrikana appeared to be an elegant restaurant with a lively cultural vibe. It made me wonder about its menu offerings—would it showcase traditional African cuisine, or perhaps modern interpretations of flavours from the continent? Was this a celebration of South African dishes, Nigerian feasts, Kenyan classics, or even Senegalese delights? As someone unfamiliar with African culinary heritage back then, the notion of stepping into Afrikana intrigued me deeply.

All these speculations finally came to life when I visited Afrikana Holloway. To say my expectations were exceeded would be an understatement—the food, the atmosphere, and the overall experience were far beyond what I’d imagined. Looking back, I can’t believe how much I’d deprived myself by delaying this visit. One thing I can confidently say after being there: if you’re a fan of Nando’s, you’ll love Afrikana even more. It brings new dimensions to dishes you might find familiar, offering flavours that are richer, deeper, and even more satisfying. And if hearty meat platters or grilled steak are your go-to, Afrikana should be high on your must-visit list.

Walking into Afrikana Holloway, I was struck by its ambiance. The space feels lively yet polished, with a stylish blend of contemporary decor and cultural expression. The walls are adorned with bold and colourful artwork, showcasing striking depictions of African traditions and heritage. From vibrant tribal patterns to portraits interwoven with natural themes, every piece speaks to the roots of the continent while energising the dining area. The furniture complements the aesthetic perfectly—sleek, modern touches like deep-green leather booths and earthy wooden tables are paired with pops of colour from cushioned benches. The use of textures such as woven lighting fixtures and rattan-backed chairs creates an intriguing interplay that feels warm and inviting. Faux greenery, including indoor trees and lush planters, adds to the atmosphere, lending the restaurant a refreshing and tranquil vibe.

Even the lighting deserves mention for its thoughtful design. By day, the large windows flood the space with natural sunlight, making it feel airy. By evening, the warm glow of pendant lamps softens the tone and transforms the room into something cosier. Combined with illuminated artwork on the walls, there’s always an uplifting and engaging feel to Afrikana Holloway.

When it came to the food, the standout dish—and one I won’t forget—is Afrikana’s We Meat Again platter. Sharing this feast with a colleague was an unforgettable experience. It’s hard to do justice to just how generous and varied this dish is. The platter brings together a delicious assortment of perfectly cooked meats: two tender lamb chops, three grilled chicken wings coated in a smoky glaze, a whole marinated chicken bursting with rich flavours, two hearty 4oz steaks expertly seasoned and grilled, and the house special prawns—a true highlight, fresh, bold, and spiced impeccably. On the side, we enjoyed offerings that uniquely complemented the meat selection: fries, jollof rice (a famous West African dish packed with tomato and spice flavours), rice ‘n peas, and coleslaw. We also added plantain to the mix—a fried banana with a texture and taste reminiscent of soft, buttery potatoes. Every bite was a harmony of freshness, bold seasoning, and complementary textures.

Even beyond taste, the presentation of We Meat Again was noteworthy. Served on a large wooden board, the meats were placed thoughtfully, showcasing their caramelised glazes and succulent textures. The sides were arranged elegantly, creating a feast that appealed not just to the palate but also to the eyes. As for the portion size, it was more than generous—ideal for sharing among two or even three diners.

What impressed me the most was how well each component was cooked to perfection. The lamb chops were juicy with just the right smokiness. The chicken wings balanced spice and sweetness beautifully while the whole chicken remained tender and flavourful. The steaks were hearty and rich, while the prawns delivered cutting-edge freshness and depth of seasoning. Even the sides enhanced the dish further—whether it was the jollof rice bursting with spice or the creamy and refreshing coleslaw that balanced the meal’s richness.

The overall experience at Afrikana Holloway was elevated further by its service and cleanliness. The staff were welcoming, professional, and knowledgeable about the menu, offering clear recommendations and answering our queries with ease. Waiting times were minimal, reflecting a well-coordinated kitchen and attentive floor staff. The restaurant’s cleanliness couldn’t go unnoticed; everything from table settings to flooring sparkled, which added comfort to the dining experience.

Afrikana Holloway offers exceptional value for money. Despite the premium quality of the food and level of care put into the service, the pricing remains reasonable. For a dish as diverse, abundant, and flavourful as We Meat Again, the value truly feels unmatched. From the moment you step in, the restaurant delivers more than just a meal—it provides an experience rooted in rich flavours, vibrant cultural decoration, and welcoming service.

If you’ve ever enjoyed Nando’s, Afrikana is likely to surpass your expectations. It takes familiar flavours and elevates them, providing a broader menu and more diverse, exciting choices for meat lovers and adventurous diners. Whether you’re exploring African cuisine for the first time or celebrating a special occasion, Afrikana Holloway offers an unforgettable experience. Don’t wait as long as I did to visit—it’s a gem waiting to impress you, and once you’ve been, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t discovered it sooner.
