BETHNAL GREEN – Arches Cafe, tucked away under the train line just a stone’s throw from Bethnal Green Overground station, is a delightful hidden gem that combines the charm of a classic worker’s cafe with a delightful Turkish twist. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with the warmth and authenticity that’s synonymous with local joints.
The menu, adorned with slightly faded photos of breakfast plates and easy-to-read large print, sets the tone for a no-fuss dining experience, perfect for the tired worker or the hungover local. The ambiance is buzzing with lively chatter, and the genuine smiles exchanged between the staff and the customers immediately make you feel like you’re a part of the community. While the sound of trains passing overhead might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I found it oddly romantic, adding a unique touch to the dining experience.
Arches Cafe has made an eco-conscious choice to keep the interior slightly cooler, which may not suit everyone, but it’s commendable in these times of rising heating bills. However, the welcoming atmosphere compensates for any initial chill.
The Anatolian breakfast, ordered by my friend, was a delightful surprise. The succulent and slightly peppery Turkish sausage (sucuk) paired perfectly with expertly fried eggs. The magical touch of honey added an unexpected yet delightful flavour profile to the meal, making it a must-try.
I opted for the Spanish omelette, and it didn’t disappoint. While it was a tad dry, it struck a good balance, avoiding the common pitfall of being overly greasy. The side salad provided a refreshing crunch and variety, complementing the dish nicely.
The tea at Arches Cafe is served just the way it should be, with a teapot containing two teabags, and plenty of milk on the side so you can customize it to your liking. As for my oat milk flat white, it leaned more towards a strong latte, reinforcing that this is the kind of place where a cup of tea is king. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect coffee, you might want to explore other options.
And, of course, we couldn’t resist trying the pancakes, which lived up to their American title with their fluffy and moist texture.
