Sichuan Folk is a culinary gem that stands out as one of the finest Chinese restaurants in England, nestled in the vibrant Brick Lane of East London. Founded by visionary entrepreneur Qing He Chen and managed by Michael He, the restaurant is known for its commitment to delivering the bold and fiery flavors of Sichuan cuisine to eager diners. With a strong emphasis on authentic Sichuanese and Hunanese flavours, this establishment takes your taste buds on an unforgettable journey through the bold and fiery world of Chinese cuisine. Prepare yourself for an experience that tantalizes your senses and leaves you craving for more.

As a connoisseur of Sichuan cuisine, we recently had the pleasure of dining at Sichuan Folk, and we’re blown away by their mastery of flavours. One dish that truly stole the show was their renowned Grilled Fish in Sichuan Chilli Oil, a culinary masterpiece originating from Chongqing. The perfectly roasted and braised river fish boasted a crispy and charred exterior, concealing exquisitely soft and juicy flesh within. Every bite was a symphony of tastes, with the vibrant sauce brimming with umami flavours and a delightful hint of citrus from an array of carefully selected spices. The medley of soft tofu skin, lotus roots, bamboo shoots, sweet potato noodles, and wood ear fungi provided a delightful textural contrast. The dish continued to evolve and intensify in flavour as the spicy and umami notes concentrated, leaving me with a rich and glossy sauce that lingered on my palate for hours. Truly an experience to savour!

Another standout dish that I must highly recommend is the Braised Pork Belly Casserole, a recipient of the prestigious Top 10 Dishes representing Hunanese cuisine in 2018. The succulent cubes of pork belly, with layers of skin, fat, and meat, were a testament to culinary perfection. Caramelized to a beautiful golden hue, these pork cubes were then braised in a clay pot with an assortment of spices, whole garlic cloves, chillies, and stock, allowing the flavours to meld together over hours of careful preparation. The result was a symphony of tastes that beautifully balanced sweetness, spiciness, umami, and savoury elements. Each mouth-watering piece of meat threatened to melt in my mouth, releasing an explosion of juices and flavours that left me craving for more.

During our visit to Sichuan Folk, we had the pleasure of trying their Sichuan Style Fried Noodle with Veg as well. As a fan of spicy and flavorful dishes, I was excited to delve into this classic Sichuan delight. The dish arrived, and the aroma of the noodles instantly enticed my senses. The Sichuan Style Fried Noodle with Veg was a colorful and inviting plate, packed with an assortment of fresh vegetables that added vibrancy and texture to the dish. The noodles were perfectly cooked, retaining a satisfying chewiness.

The noodles were generously coated in a spicy and savory sauce that had the distinct “mala” flavor of Sichuan cuisine. The heat from the chili peppers mingled with the tingling sensation of Sichuan peppercorns, creating a delightful explosion of flavors in every bite. The vegetables provided a refreshing balance, adding a hint of sweetness and crunch to the dish.

The portion sizes of all dishes were generous, ensuring that we left the table feeling fully satisfied. The service at Sichuan Folk was attentive and friendly, making the dining experience even more enjoyable.

It is worth noting that the staff and chefs at Sichuan Folk possess an impressive knowledge of the cuisine they serve. Their expertise shines through as they guide you through the menu, recommending dishes that suit your preferences and ensuring that every visit is a memorable one. The cosy atmosphere adds to the overall charm of the restaurant, creating an inviting and comfortable space for diners to relax and indulge in the culinary wonders of Sichuan and Hunan.

Sichuan Folk is a deserving recipient of its numerous accolades and awards, and it is no surprise that it has become a beloved destination for food enthusiasts. With its exceptional dishes and impeccable service, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit for anyone in the East London area. Prepare to be captivated by the bold and authentic flavours of Sichuan and Hunan, and let Sichuan Folk transport you to the heart of Chinese gastronomy. I wholeheartedly give this award-winning restaurant a well-deserved five-star rating.
