A Taste of Italy
Donna Sofia offers a cosy, authentic Italian dining experience with outstanding cuisine crafted by Chef Raffaele Zola and exceptional hospitality led by Manager Floriano Pagani. A must-visit for Italian food enthusiasts!
Donna Sofia welcomes diners with an inviting blend of rustic and modern sophistication. Its thoughtfully curated décor, featuring exposed brick, natural wood tones, and lush greenery, establishes a warm and relaxing environment. The soft Italian music playing in the background enhances the authentic feel, while elegant chandeliers provide sufficient lighting without overpowering the space. Cleanliness and comfort are priorities, as evident from neatly arranged furniture, polished floors, and padded seating. The tranquil and cosy atmosphere ensures an enjoyable dining experience, whether for casual outings or special occasions.
Donna Sofia’s menu celebrates the heart of authentic Italian cooking, offering dishes crafted with thoughtfully sourced, high-quality ingredients. The selection ranges from traditional antipasti to indulgent mains, including the fresh flavours of Linguine alle Vongole and Risotto ai Frutti di Mare. The pizzas are a standout, especially the Quattro Formaggi, which showcases a perfectly balanced blend of four Italian cheeses atop a crispy yet chewy crust. However, serving the pizza on a plate dampened its crispiness slightly—using a wooden board or liner would elevate the presentation and maintain texture. Among desserts, the tiramisù was rich and satisfying, finishing the meal beautifully. Vegetarian options are abundant and equally delightful, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Donna Sofia exudes Italian authenticity with its comforting atmosphere, impeccable service, and expertly crafted dishes that celebrate traditional flavours.
Under the professional care of manager Floriano Pagani, service was smooth and responsive. Floriano demonstrated friendliness and excellent knowledge of the menu, explaining dishes clearly and answering questions attentively. The staff maintained a balance of professionalism and natural warmth that complements the restaurant’s familial, community-friendly vibe.
The food shines for its authenticity and flavour. The Quattro Formaggi pizza offered a symphony of creamy and bold cheese flavours, perfectly baked with golden-brown finishes. The crust retained a smoky depth, adding to the indulgent experience, while the tiramisù delivered a classic Italian sweetness that rounded out the meal. Beyond taste, plating was simple yet visually appealing; however, minor adjustments in presentation—such as wood plates for crispy dishes—could further enhance the dining experience.
Donna Sofia provides fair pricing that aligns well with the quality and authenticity of the food. While portions are generous and flavours undeniable, the brick-and-stone oven, though effective, lacks the wood-fired element that could elevate the overall culinary experience. At its price point, the experience is worthwhile, making it a solid choice among Italian restaurants in the area.
Donna Sofia sets itself apart as a family-run restaurant, staffed entirely by Italians. For diners seeking an authentic Italian experience, both in flavour and atmosphere, this is a highly recommended spot. The proximity to Highbury & Islington Overground (just a 10-minute walk) adds convenience for locals and visitors alike.

The heart of Donna Sofia’s success lies in its team, led by manager Floriano Pagani and chef Raffaele Zola, both of whom play pivotal roles in delivering an exceptional dining experience.
Floriano Pagani, the manager, is a beacon of hospitality and professionalism. His friendly demeanor coupled with a deep understanding of the menu enhances the overall experience. Floriano was attentive during our visit, ensuring that all diners were well taken care of and their questions about dishes were answered clearly and enthusiastically. His approachable yet professional attitude makes guests feel welcome and valued, reflecting the family-run charm of the restaurant.
Chef Raffaele Zola, the mastermind behind the restaurant’s exquisite menu, truly excels in bringing authentic Italian flavours to life. His dedication to sourcing fresh, quality ingredients from Italy is evident in every dish. Whether it’s the perfect blending of rich cheeses in the Quattro Formaggi pizza or the indulgently creamy tiramisù, Raffaele’s craftsmanship shines. His ability to deliver traditional recipes with a refined touch reaffirms Donna Sofia as a standout Italian dining destination.
Together, Floriano’s customer-centric management and Raffaele’s culinary expertise form an outstanding duo, creating an experience that is both welcoming and authentically Italian. Their shared commitment to quality and authenticity sets Donna Sofia apart from other Italian restaurants in the area.
Donna Sofia provides a delightful dining experience wrapped in authentic Italian charm. From its tranquil ambience to its thoughtfully crafted menu and professional service, the restaurant strikes an impressive balance. While there is a small room for improvement in plating details, the overall quality, flavours, and inviting atmosphere make it a place worth revisiting.
