A Timeless Taste Of Anatolia In The Heart Of Hampstead
At Zara Restaurant in Hampstead, beautifully prepared falafel, mücver, kısır and outstanding İslim Kebabı showcase authentic Anatolian flavours, warm hospitality and a neighbourhood spirit refined over twenty-six memorable years.
T here are restaurants that simply serve food, and there are restaurants that become part of a neighbourhood’s story. Tucked away on South End Road, just moments from the entrance to Hampstead Heath, Zara Restaurant belongs firmly in the latter category.
Hampstead is one of London’s most enchanting corners. Elegant Georgian houses, leafy streets, independent bookshops, cosy cafés and the vast green expanse of Hampstead Heath create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the capital. It is a place where artists, writers, academics and families have gathered for generations. After a long walk across the Heath or an afternoon exploring Hampstead Village, Zara feels exactly where you want to be -a warm, welcoming restaurant that reflects both Turkish hospitality and the character of its surroundings.
For more than 26 years, owner Hasan Demir has quietly built something far more valuable than a successful restaurant. He has built relationships.
Zara Restaurant combines exceptional Turkish cooking, genuine hospitality and Hampstead charm to create one of London’s most welcoming neighbourhood dining experiences.
Walking into Zara, there is an immediate sense that this is a restaurant with regulars. Guests greet staff by name, conversations flow between tables and there is an effortless warmth that cannot be manufactured. It is the kind of place that becomes part of people’s weekly routine.

Turkish Cuisine with Heart
Unlike many Turkish restaurants that focus almost exclusively on grilled meats, Zara’s menu celebrates the breadth of Anatolian cooking, offering traditional dishes prepared with care and served without unnecessary flourish.
Our meal began with a selection of vegetarian starters.
The Falafel arrived beautifully crisp, revealing a vibrant green interior packed with fresh herbs, chickpeas and spices. Light rather than heavy, they possessed a wonderfully delicate texture that is often missing from commercially produced versions. Paired with fresh salad, they were an excellent introduction.
Alongside them came the Mücver, golden courgette fritters that balanced crisp edges with a soft, herb-filled centre. Fresh dill and parsley lifted every bite, while the gentle seasoning allowed the vegetables to remain the star of the dish. Comforting, authentic and beautifully executed.
One of the pleasant surprises of the afternoon was Kısır, Turkey’s much-loved bulgur wheat salad. Fresh, colourful and bursting with parsley, tomato, herbs and a subtle citrus dressing, it demonstrated how simple ingredients can produce remarkable flavour when handled properly. It was refreshing, balanced and unmistakably homemade.

The Star of the Table
Then came the dish we had been waiting for.
The İslim Kebabı is one of Turkey’s most elegant regional specialities, and Zara’s version deserves particular praise.
Tender diced lamb is carefully wrapped inside silky slices of fried aubergine before being crowned with roasted tomato and green pepper and finished in a rich tomato sauce.
The presentation is striking, but the flavour is what lingers in the memory.
The lamb was exceptionally tender, slow-cooked until it almost melted under the fork, while the aubergine added richness without overwhelming the meat. The tomato sauce brought everything together beautifully, providing sweetness and gentle acidity that complemented rather than dominated the dish.
It is the sort of recipe that reflects generations of Turkish home cooking-comforting, generous and deeply satisfying.

More Than Excellent Food
What makes Zara memorable is not simply the cooking.
It is the atmosphere.
Hasan Demir explained to Taste London Magazine that success has never been about opening multiple restaurants.
“For me, success isn’t measured by how many restaurants you own. It’s measured by the relationships you build within your community.”
After spending time inside Zara, those words feel entirely genuine.
Many restaurants describe themselves as neighbourhood restaurants. Zara genuinely is one.
The dining room feels relaxed and unpretentious. Turkish lanterns hang from the ceiling, soft colours brighten the interior and the open frontage allows summer sunshine to flow inside. During warmer months, diners spill onto the pavement, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of cafés found throughout the Mediterranean.
A Restaurant That Reflects Hampstead
Hasan believes every neighbourhood shapes its restaurants, and nowhere is that more evident than Hampstead.
The clientele reflects the area itself-thoughtful, diverse and appreciative of quality rather than fashion. Visitors arrive after walks across Hampstead Heath, while local residents continue a tradition that has lasted more than two decades.
It is this relationship between restaurant and community that makes Zara different.
There are trendier restaurants in London.
There are larger Turkish restaurants.
There are certainly restaurants with more elaborate interiors.
Yet few possess the quiet authenticity that Zara has earned over twenty-six years.

Sweet Ending: A Taste of Tradition
No Turkish meal feels complete without a traditional dessert, and Zara’s Pumpkin Dessert (Kabak Tatlısı) provided the perfect finale. Slow-cooked until wonderfully tender, the pumpkin retained its natural sweetness and delicate texture without becoming overly soft. A generous drizzle of rich tahini added a creamy, nutty depth, while scattered walnuts introduced a satisfying crunch that completed every bite.
Simple yet deeply satisfying, this classic Anatolian dessert beautifully demonstrates how a handful of quality ingredients can create something truly memorable. Light, elegant and not excessively sweet, it was the perfect ending to an exceptional meal.
Final Verdict
In a city where restaurants often come and go, Zara Restaurant has stood the test of time by remaining true to its values: honest food, genuine hospitality and meaningful relationships with its customers.
Whether you’re discovering Turkish cuisine for the first time or searching for authentic Anatolian flavours, Zara delivers both with confidence and warmth.
After a stroll through the beautiful paths of Hampstead Heath, there are few better places to end the day than at a table inside Zara, where every meal feels less like a restaurant visit and more like an invitation into Turkish hospitality.
